Driving high-performance vehicles including a Mercedes, Porsche, Range Rover and Audi, the group had set out from London with plans to travel through Paris, Lyon, Cannes, Monaco and Lake Como before reaching Milan.

However, their journey was interrupted near Morières-lès-Avignon, where officers from the Vaucluse traffic enforcement unit intercepted the cars for excessive speed while heading south towards the French Riviera.

In a tongue-in-cheek message shared on social media, the gendarmerie praised the idea of a touring rally but reminded drivers that speed limits are also part of the travel experience.

“A tourist road trip is a great idea. Doing it while respecting the speed limits of the countries you cross is even better,” officers wrote.

“Speed limits are also part of the journey.”

Each driver received a €90 fine before being allowed to continue their trip.

The police concluded with a final piece of advice: “The scenery is best enjoyed when you take the time to look at it.”
